Recommendation for replacement of protective windows

The various constructions for protective windows, as previously described, are designed to protect the polycarbonate from premature ageing.

However, in accordance with the suggestion from the German Employers Association BIA, the Machine Tool Association VDW and the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Operation IWF, it is recommended to replace the protective windows after 5 years of use.

If only polycarbonate is used, the pane should be replaced after 2 years of use at the most, due to the retention capacity caused by lubricants, etc.

The chart below shows the ageing of protected and unprotected polycarbonate:

In the following cases the immediate replacement is urgently recommended

  • Deformations (bulging) of polycarbonate caused by impact and existing cracks
  • Damage of the edge seals
  • Coolant lubricant penetrated between the various layers
  • Destruction of, or damage to either side of the protective pane
